He emerged victorious at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational a few weeks after his triumph at Hoylake, and he carried that winning momentum into the PGA Championship. In fact, if you look at the entire roster of players who have accomplished this incredible double, you’ll find a constellation of golf superstars: Henry Picard, Ralph Guldahl, Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Art Wall, Lee Trevino, Sandy Lyle, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, and, of course, Rory McIlroy.
Now, let’s shift our focus to why he’s categorized this way and not another. If you’re inclined to place an outright wager on him at +650, I won’t dissuade you. While that line may not be mispriced, it’s personally too short for me to consider. (With that said, I do believe that waiting for him to post an opening-round score of, let’s say, 1-over 72, which places him five strokes off the lead, and then grabbing him at +1150 as a live betting option might be the wisest course of action if you genuinely seek an outright ticket.)
Cameron Smith (+1800)
Smith could be my top pick for the 2023 Open Championship – if I’m not restricted by an OAD rule against defending champions. He has a strong track record at this event and has truly evolved as a player since last year, securing five victories in 2022 alone. His recent win on the LIV Golf circuit adds to his current momentum. It’s hard to find any valid reasons to doubt Smith’s chances this week.
Rickie Fowler (+2200)
I’ve come to realize that the notion of American players excelling on long parkland courses while Europeans thrive on rainy and windy links tracks is not always accurate.
Now, let’s talk about Rickie Fowler. Being acquainted with him since he was 19 (and at 34, I can still refer to him as a kid), I’ve observed that his advantage isn’t limited to West Coast courses with poa annua greens.
Fowler’s true strength lies in courses that demand creativity over a formulaic approach. That’s why I’ve always believed that The Open presents a promising opportunity for him to secure his long-awaited first major victory, more so than the other three majors.
Tommy Fleetwood (+2500)
Tommy is a player who deserves consideration in multiple categories for this preview. Personally, I find the odds of 25/1 to be slightly short for someone who consistently comes close without sealing the deal, but it’s not a bad choice.
I’m particularly drawn to the enticing value of the top-10 props (+230) for Fleetwood. He has impressively cashed in on top-10 finishes in four of his last seven starts, including notable performances of 4th-4th-6th in the Scottish Open and The Open within the past 53 weeks.
Considering his consistency, a top-five play could also be worth exploring, although there will be strong competition from other top-tier players. It’s worth mentioning that Fleetwood has a reputation for getting off to fast starts, so keep an eye on him as a potential first-round leader.
Given the circumstances, I personally lean towards the One and Done (OAD) category through the process of elimination. While I anticipate a crowded leaderboard with popular choices, I believe selecting Fleetwood could provide an advantage over others who opt for bigger names such as Rory McIlroy or Scottie Scheffler, allowing for some strategic differentiation.
